PTC came to life in the summer of 2001 when Mike de Santis, then Product Manager and World Cup Race Director for Volkl Skis, met up with Ted Schiavoni, owner of Summit Ski and Snowboard. As Product Manager for Volkl, Mike traveled across the country to various retailers assessing the tuning status of the Volkl brand. At the time there was concern at Volkl regarding conventional retailer ski tuning and its effect on the brand's performance. While at Volkl, Mike had been disturbed by the overwhelming negative feedback on Volkl's website from consumers, particularly in regards to their Volkl's first shop "tune up."
This was extremely frustrating to Mike who was working on creating some of the best shape ski technology in the world at that time. The retail effort seemed to be almost non-existent, regarding the proper tuning and stone grinding of shaped skis in general. This situation was beginning to create a growing number of dissatisfied shaped ski participants regardless of their chosen brand. Realizing the need for someone in the ski service industry that could consistently deliver the proper finish to shaped skis and snowboards is what prompted Mike to leave Volkl Skis after 11 years of employment.
Mike's extensive background combined with 40 years in the sport of skiing, are instrumental to his success:
- Graduate Stratton Mountain Ski Academy
- University of Vermont Ski Team
- Physical Education Degree UVM
- 9 years Alpine Coach at Stratton Mt. School
- 7 years World Cup Technician/Race Director for Volkl
- 4 years Product Development Manger for Volkl
- Member Volkl International Test Team
Mike literally put Volkl on the map for racing in the US, when they decided to join the US Ski Team Equipment Supplier's Pool. Developing his own special base structures, garnered Mike's athletes with numerous World Cup victories and World Championship medals. This experience combined with Mike's knowledge of shaped ski design and construction is what truly differentiates Precision Tuning Center from all the rest.
